Bible Study - Tuesdays - 7 PM Eastern Time

We're committed to providing our local members, and our "distance" members, with understandable Christian Education taught in layman's language and accessible to all.   For our current courses, we've divided the Old Testament into its four traditional groupings (listed in the order of printing in the King James and New King James versions):

  • the Pentateuch, or Five Books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy);
  • the Histories (from Joshua through Esther);
  • the Wisdom Books (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes & Song of Solomon); and
  • the Prophets (the sixteen writing Prophets, major and minor)
The current course is
The Prophetic Books of the Old Testament

.

During the month of September, we are studying Ezekiel and Daniel

In this class, we'll discuss the four Major Prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah (including Lamentations), Daniel, and Ezekiel first, then follow with discussion of the Lesser Prophets (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habbakuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi).

For each Prophetic book, we'll talk about the time of its writing, the meaning of the author's name (or its title), and its major themes.  For each book, there will be detailed readings of the most important passages from a Christian perspective.  With each book there is an icon or other work of art depicting the author from the 11th through the 20th Centuries.

For the pivotal book of Daniel, we'll also read and review those sections left out of the canonical Bible but which are included in the Apocrypha, especially those which are part of the Anglican liturgies.  These include the Prayer of Azariah (modern SAAS text), the Benedictus es, Domine, also called the Song of the Three Children, which is the basis for the Morning Prayer Canticle of the same name; the Benedicite, omnia opera Domini, a song of praise to the Lord from all aspects of His Creation, also a Morning Prayer Canticle).  We'll also read, in the modern Septuagint (SAAS), the enchanting story of Bel and the Dragon, part of Daniel's way of convincing King Cyrus of Persia that the Persian idols were not real gods.
