Paintings on Light: the Stained Glass Windows of St. Joseph's Villa Chapel
Text by the Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Shibley.   Photographs by Ronald E. & Corinne M. Shibley

Stained Glass windows in churches often have been called "Paintings on Light."  Nowhere is this more accurate than at St. Joseph's Villa Chapel, Richmond, Va, especially the ten Life of Christ windows in the upper side walls of the Nave.  We are blessed with 46 windows designed by the world-renowned Franz Mayer of Munich studio.  Known by the name Munich Style, these windows offer remarkable luminosity, accuracy of detail, especially the backgrounds, and exceptional use of color.  We're adding detail closeups of many windows to share with readers the experience of the Mayer windows.  Below is a small part of the Wheat medallion in Window 18, one of three Holy Eucharist image windows in the South Sacristy.  To the right is a detail from Window 22, The Daughter of Jairus, the second of two windows in the Life of Christ on the South Aisle.

As a fund-raising project in honor of the 80th Anniversay of the Consecration of St. Joseph's Villa Chapel in November 1931, we have prepared a commemorative book, Paintings on Light: the Stained Glass Windows of St. Joseph's Villa Chapel.  The book offers a brief history of the Chapel and the Mayer firm, pictures of 44 of the 46 windows (the three windows in the 3rd floor of the Bell Tower are identical) with commentary on Scriptural source (where appropriate), pictures of the Sanctuary Murals, and an account of the Villa's now-completed $10M renovation, the Chapel's fourteen Stations of the Cross and Sanctuary Murals, and the story of the restoration of the Chapel by members of our parish.

For a tax-deductible contribution of $20.00 (make check payable to St. Chrysostom Church), we will send you a copy via the Internet.  To keep the production costs low, we are offering the book only in electronic format.  The book can be displayed on any computer or other display device which accepts Adobe Reader technology.  Not all portable page-reader devices accurately reproduce pictures and credit lines simultaneously.

SPECIFICATIONS:   8.25" high x 9.5" wide.  76 pages.  126 high resolution photographs of the stained glass windows and the campus after renovation (some historic photographs in black and white).    Bibliography and General Index and Scripture index.  Distributed exclusively by the Anglican Internet Church Bookstore in Adobe Acrobat format.  Free Adobe Reader program can be downloaded from our Bookstore page.
